Exposure to asbestos, harmful bacteria, and other dangerous substances claims the lives of thousands each year. Exposure to hazardous substances occurs in numerous workplaces, as well as hospitals, hotels, and other public areas. In many cases, the effects of hazardous exposure are not known until years later; but when mesothelioma, Legionnaires' disease, and other illnesses materialize, they can quickly become deadly. If this has happened to you or a family member, it is important to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney, so you understand your rights and options.

Attorney Troy Owens works closely with his clients and keeps them continually informed on the progress of the case, and keeps in touch regularly even after the case is resolved to find out how things are going.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer most often contracted through exposure to asbestos, a substance commonly found in different types of building materials. Nearly 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year, and the disease does not typically manifest itself until several years (or even decades) after the first exposure to asbestos. The dangers of asbestos became widely known in the 1970s, and its use in workplaces declined after the U.S. Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) began to regulate it. Despite its known dangers, workers in many industries are still regularly exposed to asbestos. These include construction sites, shipyards, power plants, and many others. Those who contract mesothelioma in their workplace due to asbestos exposure may have the right to compensation.

What is Legionnaires' Disease?

Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia that is contracted through exposure to a harmful bacterium known as Legionella. This bacterium typically grows in water and has been found in the water of numerous places such as hotels, hospitals, and nursing homes, as well as water fountains, hot tubs, swimming pools, and cooling and A/C units. Legionnaires' disease is not contagious, and many individuals who are exposed to Legionella never contract the disease. Certain individuals are more susceptible to this disease, particularly smokers, those with chronic lung disease, those with weak immune systems, and persons over the age of 50. The elderly in hospitals and nursing homes are especially vulnerable, and outbreaks have been known to occur due to failure to properly inspect or maintain drinking water quality.
